During the study break I have really been trying to narrow down my idea and i found a great way to do that was through the Central Proposition and the Abstract. I had to actually write down what i was currently doing and where i was aiming to go. After talking to Patricia at the beginning of the week she help me clarify my ideas and Central Proposition. We also talked about how i could represent ‘sugar’ and what my design style may be developing into. I have done some research into data visualization and infographics and i feel this may be the way to express my designs visually that will make it clear and concise to the consumer.
Last night Caitlin, Gwil and I went to see ‘That Sugar Film’ which was playing at Paramount Theater as a result of New Zealand Film Festival. This was inspiring and enlightening as i feel this confirmed all my ideas when researching about the effects of ‘hidden sugar’ in out diets. Damon Gameau research into what we perceive as ‘healthy food’. THAT SUGAR FILM is one man’s journey to discover the bitter truth about sugar. Damon Gameau embarks on a unique experiment to document the effects of a high sugar diet on a healthy body, consuming only foods that are commonly perceived as ‘healthy’. Through this entertaining and informative journey, Damon highlights some of the issues that plague the sugar industry, and where sugar lurks on supermarket shelves. THAT SUGAR FILM will forever change the way you think about ‘healthy’ food. After the film finished Damon was there in person to answer question from the audience about his journey and experiences with sugar. I feel even more passionate about the topic than ever before as I believe we can truly make a change within our society. And someone agrees with this! He made the comment from a section of the film that involved The Flintstones smoking cigarettes and the audience laughing to top athletes promoting Powerade, KFC and Gatorade and he believes that in 20-25 years that we will be laughing at this concept of influential human promoting food that is damaging up as human beings.
That Sugar Film has just entered the top 2 Aussie documentaries of all time.
The film features guest cameos from the likes of Stephen Fry, Isabel Lucas and Brenton Thwaites, interviews with Gary Taubes, Michael Moss and Kimber Stanhope plus a rocking soundtrack including Depeche Mode, Peter Gabriel and Florence and the Machine.
But they are looking to do so much more than just the film. Their aim for their website is to provide a place of learning, inspiration and action. In the months ahead, they will provide opportunities to screen the film at schools, make available a study guide we have developed that incorporates interactive activities using the film and soon to be released ‘That Sugar Book’ as tools, as well as Damon’s tips and methods to explain how he got healthy again after the sugar eating experiment. They will also be providing the opportunity to help take action in reducing the sugar content in our school’s canteens and in a very special Aboriginal community that was visited in the film.
Perhaps i could arrange a screening of THAT SUGAR FILM at Massey???
